Having trouble deciding what to get the comic-lovin’ lady in your life? Here are just a few ideas that you may want to look into.
Trade Paperbacks:
This was an easy one. Is there a comic that you think someone in your life would love? Just get it for them! Do you know someone who loves the Walking Dead show? Get them The Walking Dead, Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye. Nothing says “I need someone to talk to about this series” like a gifted trade volume.
Omnibuses or Deluxe Editions:
If you know someone who collects comics, it’s not a bad idea to give them a special edition of a book they already have. I read many comics digitally, so I love getting unique collections of my favorites. This hardcover Deluxe Edition of Saga is absolutely beautiful, and it features a new Fiona Staples cover.
Something… Adult.
Dirty comic books are some of my favorite things. Everyone should check out Smut Peddler by Iron Circus. It’s a collection of dirty comics, mostly from web creators, and the entire thing is sex/women/LGBT positive.
Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, was the Eisner award winner for best new series, and now they are releasing a collected edition of the advice column called Just the Tips. This book is filled with amazing tips such as: “Having sex in new locations can be exciting, like when Neil Armstrong fucked the moon” or “Shower sex is great because you can fantasize that you’re having sex in the rain but the rain is hot because these are the End Times.”
The Gift that Keeps on Giving
There are many ways you can give the gift of comics future. A gift card to a local comic shop is never a bad idea. There is also Comic Bento, a subscription box service that delivers several random volumes of comics to your door for around $20 a month. Finally, there is Marvel Unlimited, a digital service that allows you to read 1000s of titles for $10 a month. Marvel Unlimited doesn’t always have the newest comics, but it’s still a great gift for any Marvel fan.
MERCHANDISE
Maybe you’re not sure about getting her comics… How can you know what she already has? Her collection seems endless. Then how about getting her some amazing comics merch?
Art Prints
Fan art is big business these days, and that means that there are many places you can buy prints of gorgeous fan art. One of the best places is Etsy. I’m a big fan of The Gorgonist who has amazing literature- and comic-related art.
Stuff from Geeky Websites
Thinkgeek and SuperSeroStuff both have great geeky merchandise. Another amazing website is WeLoveFine. They carry these great messenger bags with detachable flaps, so you can collect a few and trade out fandoms when you feel like it.
Also, if Lumberjanes scout badges are ever actually available, they’re exactly what any Lumberjane in training needs.
Fashionable Lady Clothes
It’s no secret that comic book clothes are mostly limited to uni-sex tees; however, there are a few exceptions. One of my favorite websites is Her Universe for cute AND nerdy outfits. You can also get amazing merchandise for the series Rat Queens. The series creator, Kurtis J. Weibe, and his wife, Shannon (mostly Shannon from what I understand), have created a great clothing line for women. There has been some recent controversy over the Rat Queens series, but I love this book, and I wholeheartedly believe in what Kurtis and Shannon have built. Check it out!
This bag
If none of these items caught your fancy, you can always just get her this tote from Kate Leth.
Happy Holidays, and merry gifting!
