Here is my first-ever comics pull list, and I have to say, this was an amazing week to start this whole thing off.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 – Ryan North, Erica Henderson
I have read preview pages of this new series and it looks absolutely wonderful. I love the art style, and Squirrel Girl is just freaking adorable. I hope this series will be as quirky and sweet as it seems.
Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #2 – Marguerite Bennett, Stephanie Hans
Angela is a fallen angel originally created by Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane for the series Spawn. She returned to comics in the Bendis run of Guardians of the Galaxy, and now has her own series with a triumphantly wonderful #1. I’m really excited to see where this series goes.
Feathers #1 – Jorge Corona
A new, all-ages series from Boom! Studios about a boy covered in feathers. Boom! has earned my trust, and I love all-ages series. I’m definitely in!
Storm #7 – Greg Pak, Stephanie Hans
Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE Storm. She may be my favorite superhero (especially Mohawk Storm). This series has been really fantastic, a great exploration of the character, and I truly hope it continues. #7 begins a new arc in which Storm’s enemies have come together to convince the public she is a villain. #savestorm
WEIRD Love #5
WEIRD Love is a series that collects classic romance comics for you to enjoy/cringe at. Return to a simpler time when being fat was a crime akin to murder and Rock n’ Roll was basically communism. I. Love. This. Series. Issue #5 features a story called “I Was Too Beautiful” about a woman that no man dares to approach. How could she ever overcome such a hardship?!
ODY-C #2 – Matt Fraction, Christain Ward
ODY-C, written by Matt Fraction (Sex Criminals, Hawkeye), was one of my favorite #1’s of 2014. This is a gender-swapped, sci-fi retelling of The Odyssey. If you need to hear more than that to buy this series… there’s really nothing else I can do for you. Issue #2 promises “Lotus Eaters,” the keepers of the most powerful narcotic in the galaxy.
X-Men #23 – G. Willow Wilson, Terry Dodson
Holy crap! Sweet Jesus mother! Dear fat Aunt Louise! G. Willow Wilson (writer of Ms. Marvel) is writing X-Men. I can’t totally handle this whole thing so I’ll just… um… graaaah! BLKAJEHTA!
Others:
I am behind on the Logan’s Legacy series, but I will still probably pick up the follow-up: Wolverines #1. I also haven’t been reading Legendary Star-Lord, but I think I’ll pick up #7 because Kitty Pryde will be in it. I’m not a complicated person; I just want to read about lady X-men relationship drama. Finally, I’m still debating picking up Sinergy #3. It seemed right up my alley, but so far it’s been a little sex-shamey.
