This year at Rose City Comicon, as we wound our way through the packed halls, we caught sight of a booth bedecked with gorgeous canvases. As we looked closer, we realized that the paintings were made up of tiny little numbers. Since some of them were depictions of space, we hypothesized that perhaps they were equations. Thrilled, I started looking closer to see if I recognized anything. I certainly didn’t, but after a short discussion with Sienna, I learned that they were indeed equations, and that each painting were made up of equations relevant to the art’s subject matter.
For example, I fell in love with the “Cello” piece, and immediately purchased it. Each painting comes with a little info card that tells you all about what formulas were used. For the piece I purchased, the info card read:
The body of the cello is drawn with the speed at which sound travels parallel to the grain of the wood.
Front (Spruce) = 5200 m/s
Back and Sides (Maple) = 4000 m/s
Neck (Rosewood)= 400 m/s
The Strings are drawn with the htz frequencies along the strings.
The wood of the bow is drawn with the Pythagorean comma (1.01364326)
The tuning pegs, tail piece and tail spike are drawn with the 12th root of 2 (1.05946309)
The hands, as with all my people, are drawn with the numbers of the clock, 1 – 12, to signify time in a fleeting moment.
In a bout of serendipitous timing, Sienna just finished a spectacular Sherlock Holmes piece that she has named ‘The Game is Afoot’. It’s an interactive art piece embedded with a puzzle that is now available for preorder! You might be wondering how the puzzle bit of it works, and to be perfectly honest, I am as well! It’s a secret! With your lovely new art piece comes a care package full of everything you’ll need to solve the puzzle including a book, magnifying glass, and a sealed envelope. Apparently no hints are given and you’re on your own for figuring it out (though you’re welcome to enlist the help of your fellow Holmsian pals). If you are successful in your endeavors, you are rewarded with a mystery prize! They’re limited, so be sure to hurry over and snag one while they last!
So marvelous. Please head on over to her website and check out the rest of her work, they’re absolutely spiffing. Some of my other favourites: Everlasting Present, Heart, Grand Unified Theory, and Flame Rust. And of course, if you haven’t already, be sure to listen to the podcast!
